Abstract

Cell lines were established from the cultures of the ovarian tissues of Papilio xuthus pupae. The cells mostly suspended themselves in the medium. The most predominant cells are spherical in shape, although there were some other types of cells in the mixed cell population. The population doubling time at 25°C was about 60 hours. From the mixed population strains of cells which have some characteristic features were isolated. The cells could be stored for 9 months at 5°C, and could recovere their viability after storage at -80°C in the medium containing 10% glycerol.
