Abstract

Sensitivity of the nervous tissue of susceptible and resistant houseflies to dieldrin was compared by applying the insecticide directly to exposed thoracic ganglion and observing effects in an intact metathoracic leg. Symptoms of poisoning appeared faster and in a much larger percentage of susceptible flies than in resistant flies. Resistant flies showed such symptoms at the higher doses only and of these, a few were able to recover. Recovery was not shown by any of the treated susceptible flies. Delineation of greater insensitivity of the resistant nervous tissue to dieldrin and ability to recover from its effects, into two separate processes contributing to dieldrin resistance is suggested.
