Abstract

A 7-year survey on bovine gangrenous mastitis was conducted on Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, The disease was found in 320 dairy cows, or in 3.7% and 26.5% of dairy cows condemned by all the disorders and mastitis, respectively. There was no tendency for the diseaseto occur in any particular month. The incidence was high among para I, II, and III cows. Of the 320 patients, 74.0% was affected with the disease by 5 years of age, 81.3% within 7days after parturition, and 78.5% died or was condemned within 3 days after a positive diagnosis was made.
