A four-county area of Iowa is providing comprehensive mental health care by drawing on local resources. The system of related services includes the psychiatric unit of a general hospital, a mental health center that is primarily locally supported, a private group practice, and a halfway house for alcoholics; longer-term care and partial hospitalization services are provided by a nearby county home with a separate psychiatric unit. The system has resulted in a continuing drop in the area's admissions to the state hospital and a substantial financial savings for the counties.
