FACTORS AFFECTING TURNOVER RATES IN MENTAL HOSPITALS
Abstract
An informal study of 12 mental hospitals indicates that the most potent factor in turnover rates is the criteria set by ward teams for release of patients. Staff in hospitals with high turnover tend to take more risks in releasing marginally adaptive patients. Among the other factors are management philosophies and pressures, competition between hospital units, admission and transfer policies, and availability of aftercare programs.
