The Outpatient Psychotherapy of the Borderline Patient

My approach to the diagnosis and treatment of the borderline patient is presented. Such patients do not constitute a homogenous group with a specific pathology or developmental defect. Their treatment requires special attention to the everyday phenomena of their interpersonal difficulties as well as to archaic transference problems they pose for the therapist. Pitfalls in treatment and special countertransference problems in work with borderline patients are delineated.
