We have studied the ferroelectric columnar liquid crystals (FCLCs) for the last 5 years and finally found the first example of FCLC. However, the rate of polarization reversal is too slow to utilize it for non-volatile memories. Because the observed slow response to an applied electric field is possibly due to the congested structures of the columnar assemblies, we have recently developed new columnar liquid crystals with simple molecular structures based on triphenylamine or so. We will present the details in the meeting.
