  • Look Inside

We performed vitreous surgery on 8 eyes of 8 patients of acute retinal necrosis. The series comprised 7males and 1 female. Their ages ranged from 30 to 80 years, averaged 63 years. All the cases were positive for varicella-zoster virus. Vitreous surgery was performed only after onset of retinal detachment or increased vitreous opacity. We occasionally performed scleral encircling,phacoemulsification-aspiration,or intraocular lens implantation, but no irrigation of the vitreous with medications. Out of 4 eyes operated after onset of retinal detachment,3 eyes resulted in the final visual acuity of 0.5 or over. Out of the other 4 eyes operated before onset of retinal detachment, one eye resulted in final visual acuity of 0.1 and 3 eyes in 0.01 or less. Silicone oil tamponade was used in 6 eyes during the initial surgery. The other 2 eyes developed retinal detachment after receiving SF6tamponade,necessitating silicone oil tamponade. The findings show that the final visual acuity was fair if the posterior fundus was not involved by exudation irrespective of the presence of retinal detachment.
