  • Look Inside

Out of 18 cases of tumors arisig from the region of the pineal body, 9 cases were confirm-ed to be pinealomas and the remaining 9 were non-pinealomatous growths. In this paper, brief clinical and pothologic descriptions are given of a representative case (Case 1) of the pinealomas and of the 9 non-pinealomas. The Histopathologic pictures of the latter were pine-aeoblastomas (Cases 2,3 and 4), papillary epe-ndymoma plus ependymoblastoma (Case 5), epe-ndymoblastoma plus primary eperdymal gliosis (Case 7), spongioblastoma polare (Case 7), glio-blastoma (Case 8) and pineal teratomas (Cases 9 and 10), respectively. It is noteworthy that tumors other than pinealomas in the region of the pineal body, in Araki's series, constitute a half (66—29%, the level of significance=0.05) of all the tumors arising from this region. Pathologic studies of tumors of the pineal body seem to support the view that this organ is of neurogenic organ. It is, however, pointed out that when a tumor in the pineal region is in question, a meningioma may possibly occur ex-cept those tumors mentioned above.
