Abstract

The pomacentrid fishes Pristotis jerdoni and Pomacentrus vaiuli are reported from Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, for the first time. The former is recorded as new to the ichthyofauna of Japan. Descriptions are provided for both species.Comparisons of Pristotis jerdoni from Okinawa Island with conspecifics from the Persian Gulf show only slight differences in measurements.Similarities of P.jerdoni and the monotypic Teixeirichthys jordani are also discussed, both from the standpoint of morphology and behavior.Specimens of Pomacentrus vaiuli from Okinawa Island are compared with conspecifics from Miyake-jima, Japan, and Guam.
