The Philippine Sea plate is subducting northwestward under the Eurasian plate along the Suruga Trough in the Tokai region, southern Central Japan. In order to detect the crustal movements in this region, GPS measurements have been repeatedly performed at stations in the Tokai region on the Eurasian plate and at Hachijo island on the Philippine Sea plate. Linear strain rates for baselines observed from these GPS measurements showed -2.2 to 2.5×10-7/year -in this region in the period from March 1989 to June 1992. Strain accumulation on the baselines in the direction of NW-SE to N-S indicated a contraction of 0.5 to 2.2×10-7/year, -while in the direction of NE-SW an extension of 0.3 to 2.6×10-7/year. Baselines radiating from Hachijo to other stations are across the plate boundary. The results of measurements on these baselines showed a contraction of line length of 2 to 5 cm/year. These strain field and convergent rates agree with those which have been obtained by conventional surveys and estimated by seismological research in this region.
