    The South Wales neurology book club recently discussed ‘Histories’ by Sam Guglani, which describes ‘the messy truth of the hospital’ over the period of 1 week. There are chapters given particular dates and different protagonists, ranging from hospital porter to chaplain, junior doctor, consultant oncologist to patients. We considered the range of characters, each with their own narrative, to be a message that everyone within the hospital has a pivotal role. We discussed the importance of connecting and creating a link with all within the working environment. The porter describes feeling ‘invisible’, Guglani drawing our attention to this. However, some of the group criticised the description of the porter ‘collecting histories’ as being written with less detail than with the clinical staff, as if it were less important.
