Abstract

Background Social functioning is the key to wellbeing (Henry, 2016). Social functioning in HD is problematic (Mason et al., 2021) but there’s a mismatch between the social cognitive literature in HD and the experiences of HD clinicians and the HD community. Reviews exist but they do not include other methods, grey literature or data which is needed to synthesize the HD community’s experience within this knowledge. Grey literature is that from organisations in which publishing is not their primary activity and grey data is user generated information which is web based such as online forums. Inclusion of grey literature and grey data is increasingly considered best practice in systematic reviews for the value it brings (Paez, 2017).

Aim and Method As part of an ongoing ethnographic study in which one of the authors is ‘hanging out’ with people with HD and their companions to explore their social skills and social networks over time, a scoping review of the social cognition and social function related literature will take place.

Results Using the best practice methodology in scoping and synthesis, this robust review will provide a realist perspective and map of what we know about social cognition and social functioning but also what we don’t know and what we can do to address the gap.
