A son of a general practitioner, Dennis James Stoker was educated at Oundle before going on to study medicine at Guy’s Hospital, London. He spent a substantial part of his early career as a physician in the medical branch of the Royal Air Force, including in Cyprus and Aden; he retired after 16 years with the rank of wing commander. The overseas postings are evidenced by publications in The BMJ on bacillary dysentery and histoplasmosis.
