A case of primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus was reported. Barium swallow disclosed polypoid lesions in the upper mid-esophagus. Endoscopically, they appeared black with a glistening surface. A tentative diagnosis of melanoma or vascular tumour was made. Surgical operation consisted of subtotal resection of the esophagus. Histological examination revealed a primary malignant melanoma with junctional activity. The patient received chemotherapy with DTIC after surgery, but he died in 19 months. All the reported cases of malignant melanoma of the esophagus in Japanese literature from 1960 to 1986 were reviewed.
