Comparison Between Mold Filling Simulation Using Non-Orthogonal Element and Water Model Experiment

Abstract

  Two kinds of water model experiments have been carried out. One is a vertical squeezetype casting where a simple rectangular plate-like cavity was used. The other is a gravity casting where two gating systems, i. e. straight and smoothly curved sprue were examined. Acrylic molds are used to observe mold filling sequences directly in both experiments. Numerical simulations were also carried out to examine accuracy and efficiency of the two-dimensional mold filling simulation method using non-orthogonal elements which was proposed in the previous paper. The original shape of casting and gating systems can be kept in those simulation models with small numbers of non-orthogonal elements, resulting in good agreement between the experimental and calculated results. On the other hand, simulation results with regular rectangular elements were completely different from experimental results in the case of the smoothly curved gating system.
