A 28-year-old male with polyps on the bilateral tongue margin following bone marrow transplantation for chronic myelogenous leukemia was reported.
This disease was difficult to diagnose and to treat, because the polyps grew very rapidly and were suspected to be malignant. In this case, severe oral mucositis was noted till day 58 after bone marrow transplantation. The patient developed chronic graft for the host disease on day 100, and the polypoid tongue lesions were subsequently observed. An excisional biopsy was performed, and histopathologic examination of the specimen revealed granulation tissue which was compatible with the criteria of c-GVHD. Based on the results as well as those of previous reports, it was suggested that the granulation tissue could occur on non-gingival soft tissue following bone marrow transplantation.
