Abstract

A 4-month-old female shetland sheepdog was referred to Nippon Veterinary and Animal Science University due to patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). During the operation, severe systemic hyperten sion (267/137 mmHg), bradycardia(70 beats/mim), and ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) were observed after the ligation of the ductus arteriosus. Acepromazine (0. 05 mg/kg) and furosemide (4 mg/kg) were utilized to normalize the blood pressure during the operation. After the blood pressure returned to normal range(128/113 mmHg), bradycardia and VPCs disappeared following the second ligation of the ductus arteriosus. Pharmacological modulation of severe systemic hypertension caused by the ligation of the ductus arteriosus an important means for making a good success in the operation of PDA.
