Abstract

A new species of Aphanothece, A. zulanirae Werner et Sant'Anna sp. nov. (Cyanophyceae, Chroococcales) is described from a subtropical coastal lagoon of Rio Grande do Sul State, south Brazil. This species is characterized by its rounded macroscopic thallus composed of numerous groups of cells disposed in a homogeneous colonial mucilage; it was found floating in a pellicle of water at a margin of a brackish zone of Peixe lagoon. The general characters, the diagnostic criteria and the taxonomic position are discussed. The cells size was evaluated statistically, and the measurements, graphics, drawings, photos and comparisons with the most closely related species are presented.
