Abstract

Valve morphology and ultrastructure of Melosira scala (Ehrenberg) Ralfs from Neogene lacustrine deposits at Jastrabá, Slovakia, was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy to clarify the taxonomic position of this species. The morphological description and typification are given based on the raw material #2847, maintained in the Ehrenberg Collection, Natural History Museum, Berlin. According to the valve morphology, it is taxonomically related to the genus Aulacoseira Thwaites, and the new combination with that genus is proposed here. The size variability of extinct populations of this species from the Carpathian realm (Slovakia) was also analyzed.
