Abstract

Portrait, Arabesques, and Guilloche are typical design elements of Banknote. However, Banknote is equipped with other important design element – the type face. As for the Japanese Banknote, the name of the Bank of Japan, the face amount, the serial number, the seal, etc. are printed. Especially, the type face called “OkuraReisyo” is important. But, the name of "OkuraReisyo" has low profile and there are almost no detailed data and references which indicated it. So, in this research, historical changes of Banknote design explain how "OkuraReisyo" has been playing the important role in the design of Japanese Banknote as a traditional type face.
