The duration of laser pulses can be many orders of magnitude less than the reciprocal of the frequency resolu- tion of optical spectral devices. That enables one to use conventional optical spectral instruments to obtain magnitude- and-phase Fourier spectra of optical temporal signals. Hence the possibility follows of using interfe,,nce and diffraction to record and change Fourier spectra of temporal signals. This situation is new for optics since the obtain- ing of sufficiently short laser pulses became possible not long ago.
