Since the purchase of ancient bamboo and wooden slips from Hong Kong by the Yuelu Academy at Hunan University in December 2007, there has been news of other universities doing the same. The universities that have acquired ancient slips are Hunan University, Tsinghua University (donated by an alumnus), and Peking University. It is a well-known fact that Shanghai Museum once hurriedly purchased Chu 楚 bamboo slips of the Warring States period from the artefacts market in Hong Kong and published them in a series with enlarged photographs entitled Shanghai Bowuguan zang Zhanguo Chu zhushu 上海博物館蔵戦国楚竹書. The bamboo and wooden slips acquired by Shanghai University and the above three universities had all been obtained through grave-robbing, and the authorities were charged with the important duty of protecting these valuable materials. Chen Songzhang 陳松長 has published an overview of the 2,098 Qin 秦 bamboo slips acquired by the Yuelu Academy in Wenwu 文物 2009-3, and in this article I accordingly present a translation of his overview together with the latest information on the bamboo and wooden slips donated to Tsinghua University and purchased by Peking University.
