Interest grows in powder coatings for wood
Keywords: Wood, Powder coatings
The British company Sonneborn & Rieck has long been a specialist manufacturer of coatings for wood. This now includes some effective powder coatings, which the company claims roused considerable interest at Interzum in Cologne, the main world exhibition of furniture supply products.
In view of their cost and environmental advantages over many types of wet finishes, Sonneborn & Rieck believes the scope for new wood powder coatings is immense. They are forecast to take an increasing share of the market currently held by coloured foils, particularly those used in membrane pressing of MDF panels, both flat and profiled, as well as replacing melamine surfaces on good quality MFC (melamine-faced chipboard). The coatings also offer an aesthetically pleasing appearance, even for comparatively low specification furniture, and have already found commercial application in office furniture, as well as for coated “contract panels” marketed to furniture and woodworking manufacturers.
Sonneborn & Rieck’s new powder coatings are said to be especially suitable for use on MDF, including flame-retardant, moisture-resistant, zero formaldehyde, high density and standard versions.
