In 2001, INIST obtained 110,000 documents for its customers through its back-up libraries. ILL referral has been steadily increasing for several years now. ILL referral service is provided at no extra charge (Ed.).

Last year, INIST called on close to 200 suppliers to fulfil ILL requests. Most (72 per cent) of the copies of documents obtained through ILL referral came from foreign libraries and among others, from the British Library, the CISTI (Canadian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information), the ZBMed (Zentralbibliothek für Medizin) and the TIB (Technische Informationsbibliothek) in Germany, or from the TU (Technische Universiteit) Delft and the NIWI (Nederlands Instituut voor Wetenschappelijke Informatiediensten) in The Netherlands. Other supply sources were networks such as the German SUBITO and the Belgian IMPALA networks.

Special interlibrary loan and exchange agreements signed by INIST and some of its partners have made it possible to greatly reduce ILL turnaround time.

While INIST is actively working on developing international partnerships, it works closely with a number of regional libraries in France and is the leading document requester and supplier within the French national interlibrary loan system (PEB – Prêt Entre Bibliothèques). As a matter of fact, it is through the PEB that we obtain documents from BIUM (Bibliothèque interuniversitaire de médecine – Interuniversity Medical Library), our major French supplier, with whom INIST has also signed an ILL agreement.

INIST has opted for the "ILL referral OK" default option on all ILL requests so that all customers benefit from this ILL referral service, unless they specifically indicated they do not want their requests referred to another library.
