e-Europe: an information society for all

e-Europe: an information society for allKeywords: School leavers, Information technology

A leaflet outlining the aims of the e-Europe initiative, which aims to stimulate the development of the Internet and the new economy in Europe and enable every individual to take part in the information society, has been produced by the European Commission. The leaflet outlines the timetable for achieving these aims. By the end of 2001, all schools should be equipped with multimedia computers and Internet connections, and online access should be available for all basic dealings with the European Commission.

By the end of 2002, all school leavers should have received training in new technologies and the Internet, workers should have the opportunity to become digitally "literate" through lifelong-learning programmes, and "design for all" standards should be published to make information-technology products accessible for those with special needs. The leaflet also examines ways of achieving these targets.
