Abstract
Many diseases of Western civilisation are rare in less developed countries. These diseases include dental caries, atheroma, coronary thrombosis, appendicitis, constipation, diverticular disease of the colon, polyps of the bowel, carcinoma of the colon, gallstones, diabetes mellitus, obesity and varicose veins.
