Abstract

At the plant of the Boeing Airplane Company, Seattle, a Yoder roll has been modified by the addition of a battery of furnaces so that high strength titanium alloys can be formed. Hollow shafts have been fitted so that cooling water can flow to prevent overheating of the bearings. The rolls glow dull red in use. Tests so far have been at a speed of about 1½ ft./min., but much higher speeds should be possible.
