International Conference on New Missions of Academic Libraries in the 21st Century

International Conference on New Missions of Academic Libraries in the 21st Century

Beijing, 25-28 October 1998

This year Peking University will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding. In October 1998 the Peking University Library will dedicate its new library building. The library, along with friends from the USA, Great Britain and other countries, is organising an international conference to celebrate these two significant landmarks. Library leaders from China and around the world are invited to join in the celebration. The occasion will also serve as an opportunity to share ideas on how to manage academic libraries in a rapidly changing information age and in the new century. The theme of the conference is "New missions of academic libraries in the 21st century". English will be the official language of the conference. The following are some examples of areas which will be covered during the conference:

  • the mission and purpose of academic libraries in the twenty-first century;

  • library management and organisational structure in the twenty-first century;

  • library services and resource sharing in the networked environment;

  • the management of electronic information (scope, technical standards, access and archiving issues);

  • libraries and distance learning in the networked environment;

  • the digital library; and

  • professional development and continuing education in the twenty-first century.

Except for travelling expenses to Beijing, participants invited to the conference will be guests of the Peking University Library. PUL will provide room and board, banquets, and sightseeing tours for the duration of the conference.
