PU coating for steel bridges

PU coating for steel bridgesKeywords: Bayer, Coatings, Steel

A new coating concept from Bayer is reported to have attracted considerable attention, after being showcased at this year's European Coatings Show in Nuremberg.

Bayer considers that its new fast-drying, two-coat PUR coating system based on its Desmodur and Desmophen raw materials has proved the ideal solution for the refurbishment of anti-corrosion coatings on steel bridges across roads (Plate 1).

Coupled with an improved application procedure, it is now said to be possible to reduce the time needed to refurbish a steel bridge by up to two-thirds. As only one lane of the highway needs to be closed, there is less disruption to traffic, saving public funds and labour costs due to the vast reduction in time needed to complete the job.

The new two-coat PUR coating is characterised by its claimed high colourfastness and gloss retention, which together with its anti-corrosion properties is thought to result in a long service life.

Special solutions are also required for critical roof coating projects. Polyurethane roof membranes based on Desmodur are said to have proved ideal on flat roofs with fittings such as pipes, lightning conductors and air conditioning equipment. As the liquid membrane is elastic, it is reported to not become brittle on exposure to weathering.
