Qatar’s green strategy will focus on greening of LNG

Wednesday, October 26, 2022

Significance

Doha’s decarbonisation strategy, which started slowly, focuses on electricity production and industrial exports. Qatar has toughened sustainability targets and moved swiftly towards their execution over the past year. State-owned Qatar Energy (QE) has awarded contracts to build two further solar power stations and unveiled plans for “the world’s largest ‘blue’ ammonia facility”.

Impacts

  • Hydrogen production will be focused on low-carbon gas-based blue but will be limited as natural gas is used for LNG exports.
  • Renewables will be used chiefly to decarbonise export-oriented industries rather than in the national grid.
  • The national grid will primarily use low-cost gas feedstock for power generation.
  • Qatar will play a leading role in establishing an internationally accepted measurement and certification of LNG’s carbon content.
