Abstract

Campus‐wide information systems (CWISs) offer the connectivity benefits of networking, the flexibility of local computing services and the power of computer‐mediated communications. Users have at their disposal a plethora of intramural resources, as well as the opportunity to tap into worldwide webs of information. Usually, the networks of which the CWISs consist take advantage of some form of the standard TCP/IP implementation, and are able to offer access to the popular and powerful applications of telnet, ftp, and e‐mail; with these, the user can navigate local and distant computers and maintain current correspondence with colleagues.
