The resolution function is derived for a three-axis neutron spectrometer in which the monochromator scattering plane is at an angle to the specimen and analyser scattering planes. The analysis shows that the width of measured peaks is much more affected by the slope of the dispersion surface under investigation than by the angle between the planes. It is concluded that a spectrometer which is used on a hole inclined at 35° would have satisfactory resolution and intensity for most purposes.
