Attenuator factors are functionally dependent on X-ray flux when dead time is ignored. The combination of this effect with counting losses downgrades diffracted intensity progressively with increasing intensity and is therefore liable to be confused with the effect of extinction. It can have a significant influence on the accuracy of the resultant structure factors. Estimation and elimination of this error source is straightforward.
