Abstract
Abstract. The transtheoretical model of behavioral change postulates a specific relationship between motivational stages and cognitions. The stages are called pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance, relevant cognitions are self-efficacy and decisional balance. The study aims at a clarification of assumptions derived from the model with regard to changes in sportive activities over a period of one year. The sample consists of 282 persons with cardiovascular risk factors who participated in a health check-up in general practices and who were re-evaluated one year later. The average age is 49 years (SD = 7.8), 54 % of the sample are males. Motivational state is measured by use of a staging algorithm, self-efficacy and decisional balance by established and published scales. Data show that 21.7 % of the sample show an improved motivation to do sports by at least one stage, 21 % demonstrate reduced motivation, and 57.3 % remained at the same level. These three groups differ significantly in the way their cognitions changed over the observation period. In accordance with the assumptions, improvements in motivation come along with improvements in self-efficacy and decisional balance. Consequently, our data support the theory.
