Abstract

Sporotrichosis is a mycotic infectious disease that is generally acquired by traumatic inoculation of contaminated materials especially from plant debris or through bites and scratches from diseased animals, such as domestic cats (Felis catus). Sporothrix species emerge in the form of outbreaks, and large zoonoses and sapronoses are ongoing in Brazil and China, respectively. These fungi are characterized by major differences in routes of transmission, host predilections, species virulence, and susceptibilities to antifungals. The close contact between humans and cats leads to the zoonotic transmission of the disease. In this chapter, we will discuss the main advances in taxonomy, ecology, epidemiology, diagnosis, host-parasite interactions, and treatment related to this disease.
