FDSN code XO (2018-2019) Network name AACSE: Alaska Amphibious Community seismic Experiment (AACSE)
Start year 2018 Operated by
  • Cornell University, United States of America
End year 2019 Deployment region
Description

This onshore/offshore broadband seismic array directly follows from the Amphibious Array Futures Workshop in 2014 and responds to NSF's Dear Colleague Letter 16-061 inviting proposals for community seismic deployments across the Alaska margin that coincide with the TA deployment. This experiment follows the Cascadia Initiative and design follows a series of community activities, webinars, etc. Everything will be scheduled for a single 15-month deployment May 2018 - Aug 2019, when ship time is likely to be available for OBS operations and while the TA is still operating. A total of 85 broadband OBS's will be offshore, subject to a parallel OBSIP request. Onshore, 30 broadband seismometers will be deployed from Kodiak to the Shumagin Islands, extending north across and past Katmai. Deployment must be coincident with OBS's. All but 3 of the sites are in remote locations, accessible by fixed-wing small craft, float plane, or boat, based in Kodiak (50%), King Salmon, and either Port Heiden or Sand Point. Because of very limited payload on small planes we need to do without vaults, and post-hole instruments are requested. Power will be via air cell only, no solar, as AK winters are dark and full of terrors. For six sites we request to include accelerometers as there is a high chance of clipping on the largest nearby earthquakes.
