Update on the new NHS

Lynn Young Adviser, Primary Care

In 1998, primary health care staff in the UK made preparations for an overhaul of the health service. The changes were spelled out in The New NHS (England), Putting PatientsFirst (Wales) and Designed To Care(Scotland). Now, in 1999, the proposed changes are about to happen. The shadow primary care groups (PCCs) in England and local health groups in Wales are now in place, while in Scotland the local health care cooperatives (LHCCs) are due to kick off on April 1.
