Nursing assessment of patients with leg ulcers

Nicky Cullum Lecturer in nursing, University of Liverpool
Brenda Roe Senior research fellow, University of Oxford

Leg ulcers are common and most are treated in the community. Nicky Cullum and Brenda Roe explain the importance of assessment

■ Accurate assessment of the patient with leg ulceration is vital

■ Patients with significant arterial disease must be identified

■ Checking for foot pulses is essential

■ Doppler ultrasound will confirm or exclude the presence of arterial disease

■ The nurse should be aware of the less common causes of leg ulceration

■ Where there is any doubt, medical advice should be sought.
