Using books to prepare children for surgery
Janette Clough Play therapist, Community Children’s Nursing Team, Gwent NHS Trust
An individualised approach makes preparation more effective, as Janette Clough explains
Generalisations about children can take into account characteristics such as development, personality and gender (Strasburger and Wilson 2002), but there is no useful stereotype for what a child is like, and no universal childhood experienced by all. Each individual has their own personal experiences and deals with new situations in their own way.
