Understanding and treating asthma in adolescents

Pat MacDonald Respiratory Nurse and Stop Smoking Therapist, St Helier Hospital Carshalton and Regional Trainer National Respiratory Training Centre, Warwick

Young people with asthma require a special approach, as Pat MacDonald explains

Adolescence is a period of great change, when a new awareness of the body develops, new impulses are experienced and inner feelings unfold. Adolescence is a confusing time for most young people but particularly for those who have a chronic disease such as asthma (Crocket 2000). In asthma, removal of symptoms and good control are always the goals of treatment but, for a variety of reasons, management can be difficult in teenagers.
