A potent cocktail

Karen Hughes Lead researcher, Club health
Mark Beilis Director
Jim McVeigh Head of substance misuse, Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University
Rod Thomson Associate director, Public health for City Safe in Liverpool

Karen Hughes and colleagues in Liverpool have carried out one of the first studies looking at the risk behaviour of young people on holiday in Ibiza

MILLIONS OF young people will travel abroad this summer to spend a week or two in a holiday resort. Most will be looking to escape from the pressures of study, work or family and to relax, enjoy the sunshine and party. But these periods of fun and sun are often associated with experimentation and excess, usually in the form of binge drinking, drug use and sexual activity (Beilis et al 2003, 2004).
