Support for staff following the suicide of a patient

Josephine Spencer Modern matron, Highgate Mental Health Centre, Camden and Islington Mental Health and Social Care Trust

This article focuses on the impact of suicide on staff and describes a study undertaken by the author, Josephine Spencer, which led to the development of a proposal for staff support as described in the National Service Framework for Mental Health

The National Service Framework (NSF) for Mental Health (Department of Health (DH) 1999) dedicates one of its seven standards to preventing suicide. As well as setting specific targets relating to suicide, it also describes standard seven as an amalgamation of standards one to six in that implementing them will have a positive impact on suicide rates.
