In the current political climate, it’s refreshing to be able to welcome an idea from across the Atlantic. October is Black History Month, an initiative started by the son of former slaves who himself worked as a child labourer in Kentucky coal mines. Later, while studying for a PhD at Harvard University, he lamented the lack of reference to black people except by negative stereotyping.
