Designers often encounter challenges during the design process. In order to stimulate more creativity, this study discusses the narrative design method: apart from providing competent functionality, the products should also convey satisfactory concepts with scenarios to affect consumers. This study aims to discuss how design practice prompts to product concept and further helps design education inspire students’ creativity. This study is conducted via both quantitative and qualitative methods. By applying the in-depth and elaborative features of narratology, a questionnaire is administered on a quantitative basis to fully examine the process of concept formation and creativity. The study framework is as below: 1.Theoretical framework: Apply the narrative design method to analyze products with scenarios to serve as the literature basis for the following questionnaire and experiments. 2.Questionnaire design: Participants with industrial design backgrounds are compared with those with non-industrial design backgrounds to discuss how narrative design influences product functionality perception. 3.Experiments: Participants are divided into the novice group and the expert group. The novice group applies the narrative design method while the expert group uses the control design method. The results of the two groups are compared and presented in the concept sketches for further professional assessment and experiment questionnaire analysis. The findings suggest narrative design helps users understand product functionality as a means of design expression. In addition, narrative design inspires design ideas but has less help in selecting product forms, materials and colors. Designers should apply narrative design to elaborate the design thinking process and to discover key problems. It also enhances the pleasure of designing and maneuvering products.
