In the process of art research and creation concerning subjects deeply revered by Chinese people, one must study the religious perspective of the Yi Jing. The Yi Jing is the most ancient Chinese classical philosophy, and provides the foundation for many Chinese disciplines. The character, “yi,” is comprised of two characters - “ri” (sun) positioned above the “yue” (moon). “Ri” represents the concept of yang while “yue” represents that of yin, revealing profound philosophies of nature. Within the Yi Jing, Tai Chi is a theory regarding the dichotomy of yin and yang, whose mystical symbol consists of opposite images. The Yi Jing’s eight elements of Qian, Kun, Zhen, Xun, Kan, Li, Gen, and Dui refer to the natural phenomena: heaven, earth, water, fire, wind, thunder, mountain, and lake. Featuring a process of artistic creation and an in-depth study of elements revered by Chinese culture, the Yi Jing has become a main perspective behind Chinese religions. Mysterious, religious forces and the predictive abilities of the Yi Jing’s philosophies reveal a life-philosophy for mankind and the phenomena behind the vast universe. The Yi Jing is very deep and difficult to understand, which deters many from studying it. In response to this, the research of this study will use imagery found in the Yi Jing to study related theories and explain variations in its symbols.
