Students' Digital Literacy and Their Expectation for Engineering Courses: A Case Study of the Computer Multimedia Course

Students of today are digital natives engaging themselves in the use of information and communication technology tools and in accessing, creating, and sharing text and videos on the web in their leisure life. The ability of digital natives to embrace ICT means that they possess a certain level of digital literacy. They are part of online communities and are able to use social media networks to communicate with friends and families as well as access services on the Internet. In addition, students develop most of their digital literacy skills and knowledge outside of formal education. They acquire related digital literacy without any request from parents or school and are motivated for their personal entertainment and social life. Under the notion of self-direct learning, students need to make decisions about their own learning and perceive themselves as being in control. In the light of how students acquire their digital literacy, this study tries to understand students' literacy and attitude toward ICT-related course learning within the concept of negotiated learning.
