Dancing Between Tongues: An Ethnographic Case Study of the Translocal Literacies and Identities of Southern New Jersey Oaxacan and Poblano Families
SUMMARY: This paper reports on the first of a series of ethnographic case studies about the experiences of Mexican immigrants from Cowland (pseudonym), a rural city of southern New Jersey. The study explored how the translocal identity of four Oaxacan and Poblano families are manifested in their literacy practices. It also examined the opportunities and challenges born from their translocal identity, in the context of the post-2016 U.S. election era, characterized by contentious discourse around immigration along with heightened nationalistic tendencies in immigration policy. Using translocality, translingualism, and raciolinguistics, the author found that, although sometimes beneficial, their translocal identities afford participants substantial challenges. The discussion centers around participants’ perception of their experiences as members of the community in which they live, work, and educate their children. Study implications and recommendations for future research are presented.
RÉSUMÉ : Cet article présente la première d’une série d’études de cas ethnographiques à propos des expériences d’immigrants mexicains d’une ville rurale du sud du New Jersey. L’étude a examiné comment l’identité translocale de quatre familles mexicaines se manifeste dans leurs pratiques d’alphabétisation, ainsi que les possibilités et défis nés de cette identité. Cette investigation se déroule aux États-Unis, dans une époque post-élection 2016, caractérisée par un discours polémique autour de l’immigration ainsi que des tendances nationalistes en matière de politique d’immigration. Utilisant la translocalité, le translinguisme et la raciolinguistique, l’auteur a constaté que, bien que parfois bénéfiques, leurs identités posent aux participants des défis considérables. La discussion tourne autour de la perception des participants envers leur expérience en tant que membres de la communauté dans laquelle ils vivent, travaillent et éduquent leurs enfants. Les implications de l’étude et des recommandations pour de futures recherches sont présentées.
