In WT mice (black bars) VEGF expression is significantly increased in diabetic (DB) retina—in terms of both protein (a) and mRNA expression (b) when compared to nondiabetic controls (NDB). PM-treatment significantly reduces VEGF expression in diabetic mice. In Gal-3 mice (white bars), retinal expression levels are not as dramatically increased by the presence of diabetes as evidenced in WT mice.
