For details on the publishing history and general organization of the volumes and livraisons, see "Notes on the dates of publication of the parts of Kiener's 'Species général et iconographie," by Sherborn and Woodward. The article by M.J. Faber cited below, "The holy grail of Louis Charles Kiener's 'Species général des coquilles vivantes," is an analysis of livraisons 1-137, based on the copy acquired by the Cullman Library as copy 2.

"The work appeared in 165 livraisons, of which 138 were by Kiener and published between 1834 and 1850; the work was finished off (rather than completed) by Dr. P. Fischer in 1873 to 1879"--Sherborn, p. 216.

"Of the first 18 livraisons there are two editions"--Faber, p. 62.

Each taxonomic genus has a separately numbered group of text pages and plates.

The plates are hand-colored.

Issued in octavo- and quarto-sized versions, both with colored engravings.

Numerous artists worked on the plates. Some of the featured illustrators include Camatte, Duménil, Gontier, Maubert, Prevots, Roch, and Vaillant; engravers include Barassin, Bocourt, Mme. Egasse, Giraud, Lebrun, and Piroel.

Printers include Imprimerie de Decourchant, and Imp. Schneider et Langrand.
